Sleep is not one long block. It moves in repeating cycles, and knowing their shape changes how you think about bedtime, alarms, and grogginess.
Most people treat sleep as a quantity problem. Seven hours, eight hours, some number to hit. But two people can sleep the same number of hours and wake up feeling completely different, and the reason usually has more to do with structure than duration.
Across a night, your brain moves through a repeating sequence of stages rather than settling into one steady state.
A full cycle runs roughly 90 minutes and passes through light sleep, deep slow wave sleep, and REM before starting again. Most people complete four to six of these in a night. The stages are not interchangeable. Each one is doing different work, and losing one is not compensated for by getting more of another.
The cycles are not identical copies. Their composition shifts as the night goes on.
Deep slow wave sleep is heavily front loaded. Your first two cycles carry the largest share of it, and by the second half of the night there is very little left. This is the phase most associated with physical recovery and with the slow delta rhythms that give it its name.
The practical consequence is significant: going to bed two hours late does not cost you a generic slice of sleep. It disproportionately cuts into the deep sleep you would have had early, which is the hardest part to get back.
Sleeping late does not shorten your night evenly. It takes the deepest part first.
REM does the opposite. It is sparse early and expands with each cycle, so the longest REM periods happen in the hours before you wake.
This is why cutting sleep short at the end has its own distinct cost. You are not trimming a bit off everything. You are removing most of the night's REM, which is the phase most associated with emotional processing and memory consolidation.
Early nights and late mornings are not simply more or less of the same thing. They protect different systems.
That heavy, disoriented grogginess when an alarm drags you out of deep sleep has a name: sleep inertia. It can linger for a while, and it is not a sign that you needed more hours. It is a sign you were pulled out at an awkward point in the cycle.
Waking at the end of a cycle, during lighter sleep, tends to feel dramatically easier than waking 20 minutes earlier from the bottom of a deep stage, even though the second option gave you more total sleep.

Ninety minutes is an average, not a law. Real cycles vary between roughly 70 and 120 minutes, they differ between people, and they change across the night and with age, stress, and sleep debt.
So use it as a rough planning tool rather than a precision instrument. If the arithmetic tells you to stay up another 40 minutes to hit a perfect cycle boundary, ignore it and go to bed. Total sleep and consistency matter far more than landing exactly on a boundary.
